MINITEL
February 10, 1985
This library contains a revised version of Tom Jennings'
Minitel communications program, dated January 20, 1985.
For those of you who may be unfamiliar with Minitel, its
greatest asset is the wide range of file transfer protocols that
it supports. The current version supports Xmodem, Modem7 (batch
transfers), Telink (a variant of Modem7 that includes file dates
and times) and Kermit. Where applicable, both Checksum and
Cyclic Redundancy Checking (CRC) are supported.
The latest version also supports VT102 terminal emulation
and any baud rate that your computer is capable of handling.
Other features are described in the doc file.
The greatest drawback to Minitel is that it does not support
auto-dialing. Alas, I guess Tom has to make a living, too. A
more complete version of Minitel with autodialing and other
features must be purchased.
A word of warning: The "minitel.pat" file explains how to
use debug to change some of the defaults of the program. A note
on Tom's Fido system says that not all of the addresses are
correct!
The version of Minitel in this library is for the IBM PC and
compatibles (including the not-so-compatible PC AT). Other
versions of Minitel are currently available on Tom's Fido system
for the Tandy 2000, IBM PC Jr., Sanyo 550 and the Otrona 8:16. A
version for the TI Professional is under development.
Even with the limitations mentioned above, I believe Minitel
is the best MS-DOS file transfer program currently available in
the public domain. I often find that I use another program for
autodialing and then switch to Minitel after I have made the
connection. The program can be best appreciated when used with a
Fido BBS system, but I encourage you to also use it when calling
my board so that you can use CRC error checking for file
transfers.
